  16. during the 1930s, '40s and '50s portrayed wide-eyed waifs and
  17. wanton women with equal ease; in Ronco, Switzerland. A onetime
  18. fashion model and showgirl, Goddard starred with her husband
  19. Charlie Chaplin in the 1936 silent classic Modern Times. Other
  20. memorable roles include the laundry girl in Chaplin's The Great
  21. Dictator and the spirited social climber in Jean Renoir's The
  22. Diary of a Chambermaid. She was also married to the actor
  23. Burgess Meredith and novelist Erich Maria Remarque.
