- <p> DIED. Paulette Goddard, 78, versatile film actress who
- during the 1930s, '40s and '50s portrayed wide-eyed waifs and
- wanton women with equal ease; in Ronco, Switzerland. A onetime
- fashion model and showgirl, Goddard starred with her husband
- Charlie Chaplin in the 1936 silent classic Modern Times. Other
- memorable roles include the laundry girl in Chaplin's The Great
- Dictator and the spirited social climber in Jean Renoir's The
- Diary of a Chambermaid. She was also married to the actor
- Burgess Meredith and novelist Erich Maria Remarque.
